The Story

Lars Park seemingly has it all. A good job, great friends and a beautiful fiancé, all in the idyllic, quaint neighborhood that he grew up in, “Old Town”. However, as Lars prepares to commit to his young girlfriend, Serena, he can’t help but think back and consider what could have been. More and more he finds himself searching online for his married, ex-college sweetheart, Mary Myers. He wonders aloud to his best friend Kelly whether he feels as strongly for Serena as he did for Mary or if this self doubt is simply his flawed, emotional, memory romanticizing his past.

Then one day the town awakes to flyers and online alerts announcing that Old Town has been hacked. Half the residents’ internet search and surf history has been captured and posted on a website for all to see. The lives of many Old Town residents quickly begin to unravel as the various search histories come to light. However, no one is hit harder than Lars. In addition to losing his job and apartment, Serena breaks off their engagement after seeing the online attention he had been paying to his ex.

Hitting rock bottom, Lars starts a community support group for those affected by the hack, “Googled Unanonymous”. The group quickly pivots from support to revenge however. Lars points out how the town has split into two factions: The “victims”, the half of the town whose search histories were released and the “other half”, the half of the town that the hack missed and who’ve been acting holier-than-thou using the information from the hacked search histories to punish the “victims”. Lars hatches a plot to dig up dirt on the “other half” in order to restore the balance of power to the town by humiliating and punishing them in similar fashion as he feels they did to him and his friends.

As Lars continues to deal with his personal fallout that resulted from the hack, Mary Myers suddenly appears in Old Town. Unbeknownst to Lars, she had become an FBI agent after they had broken up and she has come to Old Town to investigate the hack. But not before confronting Lars about “digitally stalking” her and how it has created stress in her marriage.

It’s not long before Mary breaks the case open by arresting Lars’s best friend Kelly for the hack. Things aren’t quite buttoned up however as questions of motive remain and Lars now seems to be on the verge of spiraling even further downward.

In a final twist, the internet search and surf history for the half of Old Town not originally affected by the hack is released online. Lars now has a treasure trove of “dirt” on the people who have just wronged him and his friends. Mary Myers attempts to remind Lars of the person that he once was as he struggles to decide whether to use the newly released information to help or hurt. We watch Lars’s choice play out, discover the true identity of the hacker and see how Lars and Old Town move forward into the future.
